The Paris 2024 Olympic Games were not just another edition of the world’s most prestigious sporting event; they represented a fusion of tradition, innovation, and the celebration of the power of sport. For United Through Sports (UTS), the Games provided a platform to engage with global sports communities, foster partnerships, and witness firsthand the groundbreaking performances achieved by athletes from around the world.

A Historic Return to Paris

For the first time since 1924, the Summer Olympics returned to Paris, a city steeped in history and culture. The Games were a triumphant return to the French capital, where iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, and the Seine River seamlessly integrated into the event, creating a vibrant atmosphere that blended the old with the new. The opening ceremony along the Seine was a stunning display of Paris’s rich heritage.

Looking Ahead and Innovating

The Paris 2024 Olympics were not just about preserving tradition; they were also about embracing the future. The introduction of eSports as a demonstration sport reflected the growing influence of digital culture on traditional sporting events and showcased the Olympics’ commitment to evolving with the times. The inclusion of new sports like skateboarding, surfing, and sport climbing, first seen in Tokyo 2020, continued to resonate with younger audiences, broadening the appeal of the Games.

UTS Leadership on the Ground

UTS President Stephan Fox and CEO Julia Govinden were both on the ground and in the middle of the action, attending numerous sporting competitions and events. During the Games, UTS held many productive meetings with leading sport officials and organizations, with exciting news to be shared soon.

The AIMS Council made a special visit to Paris, led by President Fox and Vice-Presidents Theodoropoulos and Gabriel, alongside Michal Buchel, Sabine Shanahan, and Wilko Vriesman representing Kei Ikazawa. AIMS used the opportunity to discuss future steps for the organization and to support the Games, culminating in a dinner between AIMS and UTS to strengthen collaborations and towards the future events.

UTS President Stephan Fox said:

“Our time in Paris has strengthened our connections and inspired new initiatives that will benefit the global sports community”.

Youth Athletes: The New Stars of Paris 2024

One of the most inspiring aspects of the Paris 2024 Olympics was the remarkable performances of the youth. These young athletes, some as young as 14, captured the world’s attention by defying expectations. Their achievements highlighted a new wave of talent redefining what is possible in sports.

A standout moment for UTS was witnessing world records being broken and new benchmarks set, such as Armand Duplantis of Sweden, who broke his own world record in the pole vault by clearing 6.25 meters, and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who set a new standard in javelin with a throw of 92.97 meters. In a historic achievement, four National Olympic Committees (NOCs) won their first-ever gold medals: Botswana, Dominica, Guatemala, and Saint Lucia. These victories symbolized the global nature of the Games and the importance of providing opportunities for all nations to compete at the highest level.

Inclusion at the Heart of the Games

The integration of the Paralympic and Olympic programs at Paris 2024 showcased the achievements of athletes with disabilities and the importance of inclusivity in sports. Paris 2024 also took steps towards accessibility with investments in infrastructure such as public transportation and venue upgrades, to ensure that all spectators, including those with disabilities, could fully participate in the Olympic experience, creating an inclusive atmosphere for everyone attending the Games.

UTS CEO Julia Govinden said:

“Witnessing the efforts of Paris 2024 towards gender parity was a great step forward! The triumph of athletes such as Imane Khelif the Algerian boxer, who won gold in the women’s welterweight division highlighted the role of sports in bringing people together. Seeing, podiums with proud athletes and countries such as Philippines, Cabo Verde and the Refugee Olympic Team take home medals gave us all a shared pride. What an unforgettable Olympic Games!”
