A Sport That Belongs to Everyone
At United Through Sports (UTS), we believe sport should be for absolutely everyone. No matter your background, ability, or circumstance, the joy of moving, competing, and connecting with others is a universal right. That’s why we’re proud to shine a spotlight on the Ju-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) and their inspiring work to make sure their mats are open to all through Para Ju-Jitsu.
JJIF didn’t just talk about inclusion; they built it into their sport. With an official Para Ju-Jitsu program and a Para Ju-Jitsu Commission dedicated to listening to and supporting athletes with disabilities, the federation is making sure no one gets left out of the action.
Creating Opportunities on the Mat
For many athletes with disabilities, the biggest barrier isn’t passion, it’s opportunity. JJIF has worked hard to create categories where para-athletes can compete fairly, whether they’re visually impaired, cognitive impaired, or living with a physical disability. These divisions mean that athletes can showcase their skills against peers with similar abilities, ensuring that technique, discipline, and spirit are always at the center of the sport.
This commitment has already made an impact worldwide. For example, when Para Ju-Jitsu was formally recognized in Brazil’s National Congress, it was a huge step forward, not just for the athletes in Brazil but for the visibility of the sport on the global stage.

Policies with Purpose
Inclusion doesn’t just happen by chance. JJIF has put strong policies in place to make sure Para Ju-Jitsu keeps growing. Their Para Ju-Jitsu Commission is there to guide competition rules, support athletes, and work with international partners as well as seeking the recognition of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). These efforts are all about pushing Para Ju-Jitsu toward bigger platforms, more events, and more recognition.
These efforts have already led to Para and Inclusive Ju-Jitsu being showcased on major international Multi Sport events. Para Jiu-Jitsu was notably featured at the SportAccord World Combat Games 2023 in Riyadh, while Inclusive Self-Defence activities took place recently at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu. Such appearances not only highlight the sport’s growth but also help build awareness, attract new athletes, and inspire organizers to include Para divisions in future multi-sport events.
This kind of leadership is vital. It shows what can happen when federations invest in real structures that put para-athletes at the heart of decision-making.
JJIF President Panagiotis Theodoropoulos said:
“The JJIF’s ‘Ju-Jitsu 4Good’ is more than a slogan, it is an inclusive philosophy and a lived reality. Based on JJIF’s belief in human and social values, it encompasses programs in anti-violence, safeguarding, and crisis management education and training programs.”

Sharing the Stories
One of the things we love most about JJIF’s approach is how they celebrate their para-athletes. On their official Facebook page, you’ll often see updates, photos, and highlights that put these athletes in the spotlight. By sharing their journeys, JJIF isn’t just promoting the sport, they’re inspiring the next generation to dream big, and they’re breaking down stereotypes about what athletes with disabilities can achieve.

United Through Sports and JJIF: Walking the Same Path
At UTS, our mission has always been to build bridges across the sporting world and champion inclusion at every level. JJIF’s work in Para Ju-Jitsu is a perfect example of what’s possible when federations take inclusion seriously. Their programs, their advocacy, and their promotion of para-athletes all show that sport can be a place where everyone belongs.
We’ve seen this time and again in our work: when athletes are given the chance, they rise to the occasion. And when federations like JJIF create those opportunities, they’re not just changing their sport, they’re helping to change the world.
Looking Ahead
Para Ju-Jitsu is only just getting started, and its future looks bright. With more recognition, stronger support, and passionate athletes leading the way, there’s no doubt the sport will continue to grow.
From our perspective at UTS, JJIF’s commitment is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Sport has the ability to unite us, to break down barriers, and to open doors. Para Ju-Jitsu is proof of that. And as JJIF continues this journey, we’ll be cheering alongside them, because every athlete deserves their moment on the mat.
